Husky Chihuahua Mix: A Sassy And Intelligent Companion

This is without a doubt, one of the strangest and unusual designer crossbreeds ever created. These feisty yet gorgeous dogs are seen as a curiosity by many, yet a quite friendly and dependable dog by anyone who has ever owned one.

These clever dogs make excellent companions for people from all walks of life, dogs that strangely enough, exhibit the type of characteristics you rarely find in the parent breeds. If anything, these dogs differ from pretty much any other breed, be it pure or mixed.

Now, these dogs have been around for centuries, so there shouldn’t be too much of a mystery surrounding their origin. It is, however, strange that someone could try and mix two breeds that personality-wise, are polar opposites of one another.

What Is A Husky Chihuahua Mix?

This designer breed combines two of the most popular dog breeds in the world – the Chihuahua and the Siberian Husky. Being so different in size, personality, and temperament, the mixing of these two breeds could have only been achieved through careful planning.

When we talk about the dogs’ differences, we refer to the Chihuahua’s bossy, yappy, and exuberant attitude. When combined with the Husky’s intelligence, energy, and overall dependability, you get a dog that’s just as lovable and goofy as it is intelligent and reliable.

As we are about to find out, the Huskyhuahua or HuskyChi dogs as some people call them, are not considered part of a distinctive breed and ergo, are not accepted by any kennel club. Even so, the dogs enjoy quick-growing popularity among designer dog enthusiasts, so we should probably strive to learn more about these cute dogs ourselves.

Appearance

Husky Chihuahua Mix Dog Breed

A Husky Chihuahua Mix tends to exhibit alternating features between the parents, so there is no sure way of telling how a litter of pups will look like before they are actually born. That said, these dogs tend to be medium-sized and spectacular to look at.

Also worth mentioning is that they can either look like the Husky and grow a little larger than average or look like a Chihuahua and barely grow over 15 inches in size. Either way, the overall looks of a Husky Chihuahua Mix pup will be determined by subtle genetic markers.

Height & Weight

Depending on which parent they take after, these dogs can grow between 7 and 15 inches tall, which may be affected by the dog’s genes as well as its lifestyle. On average, the males tend to be slightly taller than the females.

These are small dogs mind you, so they rarely weigh more than 15-30 lbs under normal circumstances. That said, a dog’s diet and exercise levels can certainly affect its weight, especially if it lives a sedentary life with little activity.

Coat & Colors

These dogs can be found in many colors, with the breed standard being either black or white. Occasionally, the dogs might exhibit patches of light grey around the head area, but this only happens on rare occasions and for unknown reasons.

As for the coat, most of these dogs have a double coat along with a well-furred tail that they carry curled and over the back. Although they don’t shed as much as Huskies, they still shed more than any other Chihuahua out there, so be prepared to do a fair bit of grooming.

Husky Chihuahua Mix Personality & Temperament

As a mixed breed, the dog may exhibit a rather colorful temperament and a behavior to match. As many of you may know, Huskies are dogs with a lot of personality, which to some extent, can also be said about Chihuahuas.

Being the friendly and outgoing dogs that they are, Huskies have long been seen as perfect companions, both in regards to their energy and willingness to work. Any crossbreed involving a Husky, as you may imagine, is bound to exhibit these traits as well.

Know that the Chihuahua side of the mix brings a feisty and colorful attitude to the table. So in a way, a Husky Chihuahua Mix should not only possess a strong and friendly personality but it will also refuse to back down from a confrontation.

Behavior

Intelligent dogs by nature, they usually respond well to training efforts and rarely lash out against their owners unless they are faced with extreme circumstances. Speaking of which, these dogs love routine and will rarely deviate from the patterns they are used to.

This is the type of dog who never shies away from an opportunity to play. Be it with people or other pets, a Husky Chihuahua Mix will always be willing to play. If the opportunity doesn’t present itself, the dog is likely to entertain itself by making use of objects in its environment.

Needless to say, this may include shoes or furniture, so try your best to keep the dog entertained as often as you can. If you have children, they might gladly take on that responsibility provided that the dog is socialized well enough to respond positively to any call to play.

Temperament

Due to how stubborn they are, these dogs may sometimes be perceived as aggressive, which may have something to do with how seemingly aggressive they present themselves to strangers. In many ways, this is no more than a defense mechanism for the dog, but not many people see it that way.

Even so, their distrustful attitude toward strangers makes them difficult in that they might scare people away. Unless properly socialized from an early age, these dogs will always avoid people they do not have an existing relationship with.

While the dog isn’t known to cause harm willingly, it may respond poorly to small children who might accidentally harm or stress the dog out. When this happens, the dog is known to nip and bark aggressively, which is why you should supervise the dog’s interaction with your kids.

Is A Husky Chihuahua Mix A Good Family Dog?

With a fair amount of training and socialization, a Husky Chihuahua Mix can make a wonderful family pet. That said, these dogs are better suited to people who have experience owning and raising dogs as they can be pretty stubborn and impulsive.

Now, you need to understand that these dogs aren’t very tolerant of young children but that they can be conditioned to show affection nonetheless. Once the dog makes a habit out of tolerating the children’s indiscretions, acceptance is sure to follow through.

A Husky Chihuahua Mix may not be everyone’s cup of tea but these dogs definitely make good companions under the right circumstances. Provided that they are given the attention they require and all the care that goes with it, they can become very lovable and dependable members of the family.

Caring For A Husky Chihuahua Mix

Almost every arctic dog breed has a thick and high-maintenance coat, with the Siberian Husky being the poster child of this phenomenon. So in a way, any mix involving a Husky is also bound to have high grooming requirements in one way or another.

A Husky Chihuahua Mix tends to have a smoother coat than the Husky, yet one that requires more maintenance than the coat of a Chihuahua. If anything, you should pray that your pup inherits more from the Chihuahua side of the mix, so as to have reduced maintenance requirements.

That said, the breed rarely has issues with regular dog food, so apart from the grooming, there isn’t much that should worry you about this interesting dog. Still, the variation of brushing, grooming, and overall care the dog needs is definitely greater than the needs of a regular pooch.

Exercise

Because of its heritage, the Husky Chihuahua Mix may experience discomfort when the weather is too hot or when the dog heats up via exercising. It is for this reason that you want to keep an eye on the dog and make sure that it doesn’t exhaust itself when running or playing around.

Part of the reason why these dogs have issues with heat is because of the coat many of them inherit from the Husky side of the mix. Even if the dog has a smoother, shorter coat as the Chihuahua, the Husky genes still make it difficult for the dog to exercise properly.

In this respect, you should exercise a Husky Chihuahua Mix for about 40 to 60 minutes a day, preferably split into two walking sessions. Also, remember to keep the dog entertained when exercising because they thrive on it on account of how sociable they are.

Grooming & Shedding

As we already pointed out, these dogs require extensive grooming efforts at all times. They may blow their coat only twice a year but they still shed a lot regularly as well. On average, you will have to brush the dog on a daily basis.

You should also see to the dog’s other grooming needs because any dog with Chihuahua heritage is bound to have long, scratchy nails. Furthermore, both the Husky and the Chihuahua need to have their teeth brushed on a regular basis and the Husky Chihuahua Mix is no different.

Feeding & Diet

A Husky Chihuahua Mix can be fed almost anything as long as it’s in a controlled manner. The reason I say this is because, in my experience, Chihuahuas are very prone to obesity. In this regard, any dog that inherits Chihuahua genes is guaranteed to suffer from the same health-related issues.

Due to the Husky part of the heritage, the dog requires a high-protein diet to fit with the dog’s energy levels. You can provide that either through a carefully chosen raw diet or by supplementing the dog’s meals with kibble.

Known Health Problems

It is a well-known fact that hybrid breeds are prone to more health issues than purebred dogs, and this is the case with the Husky Chihuahua Mix as well. For instance, these dogs are likely to have breathing problems, an issue that might be exacerbated by obesity.

Some of these dogs may also suffer from hip dysplasia and retinal issues that might in some cases lead to blindness. These are all serious afflictions anyone who wishes to adopt a Husky Chihuahua Mix needs to consider sooner or later.

How To Train A Husky Chihuahua Mix

We talked about the importance of structure and routine when dealing with these types of dogs and this also applies to training. When training a Husky Chihuahua Mix, try to reinforce positive behavior with treats and snacks.

Choosing any other avenue than positive reinforcement is bound to render the dog resentful and uncooperative. This is because of how stubborn these dogs are, a stubbornness that’s closely related to their intelligence and inquisitiveness.
